Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
